Grapefruit juice improves CoQ10 absorption
Grapefruit juice enhance the uptake of coenzyme Q10 in the human intestinal cell-line Caco-2” in the May 15, 2010 issue of Food Chemistry
CoQ10
was first identified in 1957. Since then, growing scientific evidence has highlighted its importance for health. It occurs in every body tissue, especially the heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas. Its many roles include supporting healthy inflammation levels, normal mental function, heart health and normal blood sugar (2–7). It is also a powerful antioxidant and plays an important part in cellular energy production.

Despite these health benefits, one of the main problems with
CoQ10
is its low bioavailability, meaning poor intestinal absorption (8). This requires combining
CoQ10
supplements with fat-containing components to support absorption (9). A new laboratory study found that grapefruit juice may improve the uptake of

CoQ10
Researchers found that cells incubated for two hours in a solution containing 1% grapefruit juice absorbed 50% more of the compound than placebo-group cells. Grapefruit juice therefore significantly increased its uptake.
The researchers suggested that grapefruit juice increases uptake of
CoQ10
by reducing the activity of the protein
P-glycoprotein
, which directly controls uptake of
CoQ10
into cells.

Grapefruit juice affects absorption of prescription medicines, including medicines for blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart rhythm, requiring awareness and appropriate action. Taking prescription medication? Inform your treating physician if you wish to add grapefruit juice to your diet.
