The source describes cobalamin as structurally related to blood haemoglobin and notes that B12 deficiency can cause anaemia. Conventional physicians mainly aim to maintain adequate blood cobalamin to prevent anaemia. The commonest form is cyanocobalamin. Over the preceding decade, central and peripheral neurological diseases had been linked to a specific deficiency of another B12 form, methylcobalamin. The source describes this form as needed for protection against neurological disease and ageing. The liver converts a small amount of cyanocobalamin to methylcobalamin, but the article argues that larger amounts are needed to repair neurological defects and protect against ageing. Published studies cited in the source indicate that high methylcobalamin doses are needed for neuron regeneration and maintenance of the myelin sheath protecting nerve axons and peripheral nerves.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u><br \/>\nCFIDS (chronic fatigue syndrome) and B12<br \/>\n<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>An important study reported in the summer 1998 issue of HealthWatch described a new finding: more than 60% of patients with CFIDS and fibromyalgia had low cerebrospinal-fluid B12 levels, though not markedly outside the normal range, as reported in the source. According to Dr Paul Cheney\u2019s CFIDS treatment pyramid, B12 in a form other than cyanocobalamin has a strong effect on the brain. Recent European studies suggested methylcobalamin might protect cognitive function in CFIDS by preventing brain-cell death.<br \/>\nOne cause of brain-cell death is glutamate toxicity. Brain cells use glutamate as a neurotransmitter, but it can also kill them. Release from synapses normally allows neurons to communicate. Effective communication requires controlled release at the right time to the right cells. Excessive release disrupts communication; a flood of glutamate overstimulates neurons and damages them.<br \/>\nThe source presents methylcobalamin supplementation as a possible way to protect brain cells against this toxicity. A study in the European Journal of Pharmacology found protection against glutamate-induced neurotoxicity in rat cortical neurons. Researchers concluded that methylcobalamin protected through improved brain-cell methylation.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u><br \/>\nSleep<br \/>\n<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A German study reported in Neuropharmacology showed that methylcobalamin reduced various sleep disturbances. Sleep quality, alertness and concentration improved. Part of the effect apparently involved suppression of daytime melatonin. Morning methylcobalamin reduced drowsiness by lowering daytime melatonin levels.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u><br \/>\nNerve regeneration<br \/>\n<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Some substances have been shown to regenerate nerve cells in people with peripheral neuropathy. A study in the Journal of the Neurological Sciences proposed that methylcobalamin could increase protein synthesis and aid nerve-cell regeneration. Scientists observed regeneration in laboratory rats given very high doses.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u><br \/>\nCancer \/ immune function<br \/>\n<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A study in an oncology journal examined methylcobalamin in several mouse tumour types. Seven days of administration suppressed tumour growth in the liver and lungs. Treated mice survived longer than untreated controls.
