The Journal of Rheumatology\u00a0April 2002,\u00a029\u00a0(4)\u00a0678-681;<\/em>\n<\/p>\n<p>Cat\u2019s claw (Uncaria tomentosa) has been used for thousands of years in traditional South American medicine and, in recent decades, in the West. It contains compounds such as quinones, glycosides and sterols with various effects on immune function: increasing phagocyte counts, regulating B and T lymphocytes, reducing inflammatory proteins, antitumour activity and regulating immune overactivity in autoimmune conditions. Researchers believe its unique combination of constituents enables broad anti-inflammatory and antipathogenic (antibacterial) activity.<\/p>\n<p>Many studies have demonstrated its activity in supporting immunity and preventing winter illnesses, digestive ulcers and bacterial infections. It is considered among the safest herbs for long-term use.<\/p>\n<p>Its specific immune indications led researchers to examine its immune-modulating effect in rheumatoid arthritis (RA), a common autoimmune disease attacking the joints.<\/p>\n<p>RA affects all population groups and is becoming increasingly prevalent in the West. It is characterized by widespread joint pain, swelling, redness, restricted movement and damage to other organs.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers examined cat\u2019s claw extract\u2019s effect on quality of life in patients with RA.<\/p>\n<p>A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in The Journal of Rheumatology examined its anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects.<\/p>\n<h2>Forty participants diagnosed with RA and receiving medication took part.<\/h2>\n<p>During the first, 24-week double-blind placebo-controlled phase, participants were divided into group A (21), taking 60 mg cat\u2019s claw extract once daily, and group B (19), taking placebo.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of this phase, group A showed a 53% reduction in pain, inflammation, swelling and morning joint stiffness compared with controls.<\/p>\n<p>During the second phase, lasting 28 weeks, the former placebo group B began taking cat\u2019s claw extract instead.<\/p>\n<p>After 28 weeks, group B showed reduced pain, inflammation and joint tenderness, similar to group A\u2019s results compared with placebo.<\/p>\n<h2>Study conclusions:<\/h2>\n<p>The findings demonstrate the efficacy of cat\u2019s claw extract in relieving RA symptoms.
