Over time, diabetes may lead to complications including neuropathy. Persistently high blood sugar is the main cause of polyneuropathy.<\/p>\n

The study aimed to assess the effects of alpha-lipoic acid on diabetic neuropathy symptoms.<\/p>\n

One hundred patients with diabetes received 600 mg alpha-lipoic acid intravenously each day for three weeks, followed by 300\u2013600 mg orally for three months.<\/p>\n

Five physicians conducted the study, each supervising 20 patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes.<\/h2>\n

The 100 male and female patients were followed for diabetes duration and treatment, duration of polyneuropathy symptoms, height, weight, BMI, patients\u2019 subjective assessments, physicians\u2019 objective examinations and physicians\u2019 subjective assessments.<\/p>\n

The mean age was 61.36, with the oldest patient aged 79 and the youngest 40. The reported mean age at developing diabetes was 11.9. There were 35 men and 65 women; 16 had type 1 diabetes, 80 had type 2 and four were unclassified. Sixty-nine received insulin and 31 took oral glucose-lowering medication. Diabetes duration ranged from under one year to 28 years. Polyneuropathy symptoms had lasted a mean of 3.02 years, ranging from under one year to 15 years. Mean height was 1.70 metres, mean weight 76.13 kg and mean BMI 26.51.<\/p>\n

Statistically significant improvements (P>0.05) were recorded by Friedman\u2019s repeated-measures test compared with baseline in sensory polyneuropathy symptoms, pain as a symptom, total polyneuropathy score, patients\u2019 subjective assessments and physicians\u2019 subjective findings. No significant differences were found in autonomic or motor neuropathy.<\/p>\n

The study concluded that taking alpha-lipoic acid for three months helps reduce diabetic neuropathy symptoms<\/strong>. Except for one of the 100 patients, subjective improvement was observed after using the treatment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
